In my preparations for leaving for Italy I've been doing a massive load of reading. I've browsed books like Frommer's Florence & Tuscany Day by Day and The Antique & Flea Markets of Italy. I just finished E. M. Forster's A Room with a View. That was a good novel! It's now on my list of movies to rent before I leave. I'm also reading The House of the Medici, since Florence is the home of this very old and wealthy family. And both The Stones of Florence and The Renaissance, A Short History are on my list of summer reading. I've even pulled out my copy of 1000 Places to See before You Die and highlighted spots in Italy that I may be able to visit on weekend excursions.
I am slowly getting through the Rosetta Stone Italian program. It gets harder and harder everyday. I'm not so sure how my plan of mastering the Italian language is going to work out. It seems to me it's going to have to be a lifetime habit, if I'm ever going to be fluent..
Here's my list of movies to watch before I leave:
(you should check them out too!)
Il Postino
Pane e Tulipane
Tea with Mussolini
A Room with a View
La Vita e Bella (Life is Beautiful)
Fiorile
Under the Tuscan Sun (even though I've already seen it)
The English Patient (a hauntingly beautiful story)
Much ado about Nothing (Shakespeare in Italia!)
My House in Umbria
